Anexperimentalapproachwaspresentedtoinvestigatedynamiccompressivebehaviorsof softmaterialsbyasplitHopkinsonpressurebar(SHPB)setupwithlateralconfinement.Inthedynamicexperiments, thespecimenwasconfinedinathin-walledmetallicsleeveandloadedaxiallybya splitHopkinsonpressurebar.Theradialstressandstrainofthespecimenwasobtainedbythecircumferentialstrainattheouterwallofthesleeve. BycombiningthesignalsrecordedbythetwogaugesontheHopkinsonpressurebar, thehydrostaticpressure-volumeevolutionofthespecimenwasachieved. Additionaldynamiccompressionexperimentswereconductedonpolymericfoam materialsby theabovemethod.Experimentalresultsdisplaythatthepresentedmethodcanbeusedtomeasurethe volumecompressioncharacteristicsofsoftmaterials.
