Abstract
Inordertobetterunderstandthedynamicbehaviorofratesensitivematerialandstructure,
acomputationalmodelforthedynamicresponseanalysisofamildsteelbeamsubjectedtosquare
pulseloadingispresented,whichisderivedthroughdiscretizingdirectlytheLeefunctionaltobeappliedintheminimumprincipleofaccelerationofelastic-
plasticcontinuaatfinitedeformation.Since
thestrainratedependentCowper-Symondsequationisintegratedintostress-strainrelationequations,
theeffectsofstrainratecouldbetakenintoaccount,andthedynamicresponseofsteelbeamunder
explosionandimpactloadcouldbepredictedaccurately.Thevalidityofthemodelisverifiedbysimulatedresultsfromthegeneral-
purposefiniteelementprogram ABAQUSandfurthercomparedwith
therigid-plasticsolutions.Basedonnumericalsimulationofthismodel,theeffectofstrainrateon
dynamicresponseofsteelbeamunderuniformlydistributingandconcentratepulseloadsisdiscussed
indetail.Thenumericalresultsshowthatthereisanovelresponsemodeofabnormalbehaviorofthe
steelbeams,theabnormalwindowisshiftedandenlarged,andtheactualpermanentdeflectionof
steelbeamcannotbepredictedbypreviousrigid-plasticmodelincertainrangeofloadmagnitude.
