Abstract:
Toexploretheeffectsoftheinitialdefectsonthefragmentationprocessesofmaterialsat highstrainrates,anexplicitFEMcodewasusedtosimulatethedynamicfragmentationprocessesof thinelastic-plasticbarsundergoinguniformhighstrain-ratetensiledeformations.Thethinbarwas prescribedwithperiodically-distributedgeometricaldefects.Numericalsimulationsdisplaythatthe barswiththeinitialdefectsusuallybreakintopiecesearlierthanthosewithoutdefects.Forthethin barswiththeperiodically-distributeddefects,thereexistsastrain-rateregioninwhichthefragmentationprocessiscompletelycontrolledbythedefects. Thisfragmentationprocessiscalledthedefectcontrolledfragmentationprocess. Thespacingandthesizeofthedefectsalsoaffectthefragmentation processbymovingthestrain-rateregionofthedefect-controlledfragmentation.Theeffectsofthe combineddefectdistributionontheductilefragmentationprocesswerealsodiscussed.
